Who can be a firefighter

Almost anyone can be a volunteer firefighter with the CFA. As long as you are of sound mind and body there is a role for you.

It doesn't matter if you work full-time, part-time or not at all. Whether you are available most of the time or only some of the time, every little bit helps.

You don't need to be big, strong and super fit. You'll be working in a team and there's lots of important roles that suit a range of abilities and skill levels. As a volunteer, you will never be forced to do things you are uncomfortable with or lack the confidence to do.

You'll be working alongside experienced members who can give advice, guide you and help look out for your safety. But before you attend your first fire, the CFA provides accredited training so you gain the knowledge and skills required to stay safe and be effective.

No interest in being a firefighter?

There's plenty of other roles like admin, catering, maintenance or fund raising that you can be a part of. Each year CFA volunteers do roadside fundraising for the Royal Children's Hospital Good Friday Appeal. Come and shake a can with us!

The Nyah Nyah West Fire Brigade is made up entirely of volunteer members. Anyone can volunteer and all contributions great or small help to run the brigade and protect our community.

We need you

If you're on the fence about volunteering, why not get in contact with us and have a chat with a brigade member. We welcome everyone and can arrange a time so you can come down, meet some of the people, see the facilities and ask any questions you might have

That way you can learn more about what's involved and if you would like to help out in some way. Everyone's experiences will vary, but you'll get to meet other locals, gain new skills and provide a valuable service within the community

Many hands make light work. That's certainly true, but having more firefighters on the team gives us the best chance of having crews respond quickly to every emergency.

Help during working hours

Are you in the local area during working hours and able to respond to some of the call outs? Please consider joining the brigade.

Many of our members are unable to respond during these times. By volunteering you could really help the brigade when it's most difficult to turn out a crew.
